Certificates

I just finished the amazing SLP Method course, and I took the quiz (and got 68/68). It showed that I will receive a certificate and I should wait for a few minutes. After half an hour, the certificate has loaded into my profile. However, when I download it, it is blank. Are the certificates not fully ready, or should I keep wating?

Thanks Qixuan for your post.

We just realized that there was a bug regarding the certificates now. We'll fix it as soon as possible.

Thanks again!!!! 😀

dutch against 1.c4 e6 2.g3 with the basic black mood repertoire .

i played a rare positional game and used tactics to get an edge . I especially like my last move which made him resigned! Big thanks to the tactic ninja and mating matador course . As it was a slow pace game ,  I had time to use the 7 Q methot in different position and it really helped me to find  the right continuation . First was on move 13.. when I did exchange a knight despite having a space advantage. I figured out that mine was going to be lesser than his if I avoided the trade. Usually when I think I have a certain advantage ( bishop pair for example ) I have problem to let it go if the position ask for it !  Move 20 .. f4 took me so long to be played but I went with the happy piece idea and TV concept ! 21… Bxh3 was also a difficult decision but this knight was helping his defense and my bishop was bad . I was giving activity to his bishop but it was working almost alone  so I went for the endgame grapping a free pawn on f2 with the idea of coming back to block the long dark square diagonal to prevent any attempt from the queen to get back in play ! A practical decision ( engine was  saying Qe3 is better ) thanks to the WWP course !  As you can see ( if you read till the end… lol 😂) this game is a little bit of so many great stuff I learned on chessmood since march . Thank you very much to all of you !

https://lichess.org/pM9ogxzE/white#43

My opponent played the St.Geaorge defence 1..a6? against me, something not covered in the courses although there is a section on playing against dubious moves. I used a setup very similar to Avetik's favourite setup (e4, d4 Nc3, f4, Bd3, Qe2, Nf3 etc) except I played Nd2 instead of Nc3 due to his queenside play. After that it was just simple chess-take the centre, develop my pieces, get my king safe whilst bringing my rook into the the game, launch the attack, sac a piece to open up their king and he resigned on move 22 in a hopeless situation.

https://www.chess.com/game/live/93015792949
i played quite aggressively ! I even tried to go for checkmate instead of taking the queen but at the end I took it anyway ! I let opponent forked me with a pawn but surprisingly it s a blunder for black !

I won a pawn after the opening. Opponent's king was a little weak but he just hung his queen. I didn't play the best though.

big pressure on kingside with white, took some pawns with tactics and found a nice way  to  force checkmate at the end .

Some tactics, more on desperado and discovered check. White moved Qd2, the obvious move, which made the move f4 the crucial move.

Another short game, more on tactics still. Also, the 2 games I posted were played on the same day

in this game, black space on king side was worth a rock: the ne3 is also a strong beast:

But otherwise my best Benko.

Mikhail_MH_Tal vs ARMANDAS_130: Benko Gambit Accepted: Yugoslav • lichess.org

A nice Grand Prix attack. My opponent went pawn f5 on move three which was new to me. I ended up letting him take my rook on a1 in exchange for allowing me to have great pressure on the king side. It ended with a pretty mate.

Scotch , potter variation ! Bxf2 ?! I applied the WWP and played a solid game ! the kind of game I used to blunder and lose too often but not this time , thanks to the ChessMood courses !

Solid play in the opening and middlegame set up a nice deflection tactic on move 24. I gave my opponent more chances than deserved in the endgame in mutual time trouble, but was on the whole a game I'm very proud of.
Thanks, Jake

a win with black in the French attack exchange variation under 20 moves. I could have push g5 early and should have defended f7 by Nd8 but I could not hold myself and gave an exchange and a bishop on h3 . My opponent blundered with Bf3 but I love so much that mating pattern of Q+B that I m showing this game anyway !

my best game in this variant . Close sicilian with Bxc6 and Nf6 e5 Nh5 . After some bad experiences with a too early g4 , I finally learned to play Nf3 and he rewarded me with Bg7 , leaving no square for his last horse !

a good attacking game: antisicilian part 5: danger at the h line: do not castle there: https://lichess.org/igodMlPlMMB3

Round 1 of 4NCL 2023-4  - missed a couple of opportunities but still won convincingly.

Round 2 of 4NCL 2023-4 - a nice win in the second round, this time for the 1st team. A couple of minor errors which the opponent failed to see, and the rest was pretty much quintessential strategic play of tying the opponent down to the defence then going for something on the other side of the board and back again. A candidate for a Scotch Bc5 model game.

NB. Time control is 1hr:40min+30seconds for 40 moves, then 50 minutes bonus.

Nice Attack, and two nice tactics😃

Even if everything wasn't perfect I m always amazed how easy you can push opponents to make mistakes in Benko.

Thanks!    - Jake

Here is a fun game against the Petroff!

In this game after a bad opening I liked how I was patient and continued putting pressure on opponent till recovering from a bad position.

https://lichess.org/uhbbZGJo/black#0.

I got a good position in this game but unfortunately allowed a tactic with which I lost a piece. But still I did not lose my hopes, and quickly got into SLP mode! Even after a piece down I started pressurizing my opponent and he was almost lost, but because of my time pressure…..

This can’t be best game of the month but I think have chances for slp of the year ! My opponent was 300 pts higher than me , had plenty of time left and i was playing in time pressure . after some very bad play from me , I went into slp mode and he was not able to win nor even draw which is almost even worse at the end !

This game was also played in World Youth Championship.

It was a Philidor Promenade even if not perfect:

https://lichess.org/LHlQ7ZTt/white#0.

Was playing with black and my first game in the French Team (for Annemasse board 3) in Chambery. We played with 1hour penalty because of late arrival.. (1h30 – 30min) plus 30 sec per game (and 30min after move 40). Anyway, was happy with the Dutch stonewall attack and not messing it up. Missed the stronger lines but was good enough.

14.Bxh7 is a classic; 19.Bf4 to keep an escape square for the queen in case of Rh8 and 21.Rxe6 to make him depressed (saw Nxf7 too but threatening the Q/K fork felt better from psychological point of view and he collapsed… :-)

My best game of the month, amazing sacrifice, punishing opponent's mistakes

I had better games but I will share the one that won against a 200 elo points higher opponent (when the game was played).

She sacrificed a pawn in the opening which I hold onto it (only as long as I wasn't my development back) until she couldn't do much.

May I request that when the winners are posted, we also have their games linked so we can see the brilliancies? Thanks

Hello champions!

How are you all doing today?

We had plenty of interesting games. Thank you for sharing them. It’s so nice to see you all applying what you learn and experimenting with new ideas. We enjoyed going through them.

Moving on to the prizes now…

The first prize goes to Saphira Bond for their 19-move win. 11.e5 was an interesting decision, which allowed you to get 3 pieces for the Queen. Then it was courageous to sacrifice the 2 Knights with Nxe6 and Nxd5, quickly finishing off the game. Congratulations!
https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/94128125923?tab=analysis&move=36

The 2nd prize goes to Yuvan Kumar. Great to see how you started an attack on the Kingside using the extra space. The final checkmate with a Queen sacrifice just made our day! Well played!
https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/56539191917?tab=analysis&move=0

Rick Janss takes the 3rd place. Even after getting a slightly uncomfortable position out of the opening, you kept fighting. The decision to give up a full Rook and go all in with the attack was a brave one. Good to see how you patiently wrapped up the game even while being down a Rook. Well done!
https://lichess.org/AiP7qyOz#47

Siva Vision64 takes the 4th prize for their fantastic Dutch attack! Nxh3 was a bold sacrifice to make! Then to carry out the attack calmly, bringing more pieces and checkmating in style was nicely done!
https://lichess.org/tvBlbuQv/black#54

The 5th prize goes to Adam Machnik. Despite losing a pawn in the opening, you didn’t lose control but completed your development. Another instructive moment was when you opened the lines on the Queenside to attack. And the final King hunt, starting after Rxa6, was nicely executed. Good job!
https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/93708016803?tab=analysis&move=58

Congratulations to all of you.
And once again, we thank everyone for sharing your games.

Let’s keep the Cogro as we head into the last month of 2023!

See you in the next contest. Wishing you all the best!

Solving Puzzle

I tried a several number of puzzles but the  right moves that I made were suggested wrong; rather, the wrong moves were granted as right. Is it a technical problem or something else?

How happy I were ! If I could earn the coins solving the puzzles at first attempts.

Replies

Bro, If you have any doubts about the Daily Puzzles, you need to post the link or mention the date of the puzzle along with it. Particularly which move do you think is wrong & which move do you think is right?

Opening

Should I play in a OTB tournament without studying the advanced section in the opening courses? Will the be any problem? I am a 2320 on lichess so that you get an understanding of my strength. I have a lot of time,, nut instead of studying the opening, i would prefer studying the middlegame or endgames

Replies

If you are 2320 on lichess and this is your first OTB tournament I would say dont worry about the opening, go enjoy the experience.  I am 1500 ECF (similar to FIDE) and about 2100 lichess classical; opening prep isnt a big part of the game at my level.

Definitively you don't need to study the advanced sections to play in the tournament. The advanced sections are difficult to remember and are focused to around 2200 FIDE onwards, not lichess. You are supposed to know all the normal variations and then when you know them and have reached this level, you should go there. Another time to study the advanced variations is when you know that your opponent will play that way, otherwise, wait a bit.

Avetik and Gabu say it time and time again in the videos, not to watch them until you are 2200 fide, but many students keep studying it and trying to memorize the moves. This is not practical and you should follow our recommendations. That is why we make the courses thinking in the different levels and needs of all of you.
Good luck in the tournament, and play OTB as much as you can, it is there where you become stronger and aware of the positions that you play…😄

Thank You!

Don't forget that key moves rarely happen during openings.

Lichess or chess.com

Lichess or chess.com which is better to play in online ?

Replies

IMO chess.com for blitz, bullet, puzzle rush, correspondence. Lichess for rapidplay, better host for longplay matches, puzzles, database.

Lichess is probably also better for phone and slow Internet, I've lost countless chess.com games due to a slow interface which needs a fair bit of work to improve.

I would use chess.com for playing games (rapid + blitz) as the cheating detection is more accurate. However, bullet on chess.com is unplayable because of the 0.1 seconds it takes to premove. Puzzle rush on chess.com is nice, but the lichess study feature is miles away from anything chess.com has and is the best way to analyze your games if you don't have ChessBase.

In short, play on chess.com and do everything else on lichess.

I use Chess.com for puzzles (because I'm to lazy to do a lot of puzzles on lichess to set my rating correct) and puzzle rush. Also news.

I use Lichess for basically everything else. It's just so much better in my opinion.

Lichess follows FIDE laws, e.g, Knight vs pawn endgame. Even though the knight can't checkmate the king, if the side with the pawn flags, he loses as there still is a possible checkmate position (self mating yourself in the corner :>).

However, chess.com follows USCF rules. Meaning that if we have a similar endgame, it will end in a draw even though the one with the pawn flags as one knight cannot checkmate a king.

Another difference is that chess.com allows you to make multiple premoves at once, but uses 0.1 second every premove.

Lichess, on the other hand, only allows one premove at a time, but uses no time at all.

In conclusion, it really depends on yourself! There is no true “victor” but depends on what you prefer most.

Hope this helps :>

Lichess

I would prefer Lichess as most of their stuff is free as it is a non-funded organization. But when it comes to design and tournaments, Lichess is lacking that, this is mainly because there are less people on Lichess than Chess.com. Lichess have very few tournaments (hosted by special people) and Chess.com can certainly provide that as there are more than 1M+ people who play Chess.com everyday so there will be a lot of tournaments by titled players or regular players.

Overall Chess.com wins this but if you want the free items then go for Lichess

Lichess because its free

Anti-Sicilian

😀

Please i need help on it.

I always play open sicilian and i have some theory but not much.

If you could help i would really appreciate it!

I have a lichess study so here it is: https://lichess.org/study/EGrhMKyO

If you could make a course on the open sicilian it wouls be good.

Replies

For white chessmood doesn't recommend to play Open Sicilian with 2. Nf3 because it has very much theory. Some variations are even bigger than some openings.

Chessmood has already made courses on the Sicilian for black. You can find them in the category “Step-by-step opening repertoire for Black”

King activity

Hi, I've recently played two games where I reached the endgame. Now, my question was, in those specific positions, should I get my king active and around what move? There are 4 pieces in total plus pawns, and I had fear that activating my king would have led me to lose my pawns and then get into difficult position. However closing my king around my pawns got me checkmated in one game (even thou it was a blunder, but the point is that if I had activated it before it wouldn't have happened) and almost in the second. The position are from these games: 1. https://www.chess.com/game/live/95796901953 here I was black      2. https://www.chess.com/game/live/95939036395 here I was white

also don't look at the other moves in the games, they are terrible, but I'm learning. thank you

Replies

Hi there.

I haven't been playing for very long so keep that in mind!

I've read that, as a general rule, if the combined value of the pieces (not pawns, just the pieces) for both you and your opponent is less than 12 then it is time to start bringing your king towards the centre of the board and to use him to attack your opponent's pawns.  So, for example, if you have a rook (5) and a knight (3), plus pawns, and your opponent has 2 bishops (2 x 3), plus pawns, then you should bring your king out.

Caro Kann Doubts

e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Bd3 Bd6

How to continue after black plays bd6 .a lot of players are playing bd6 and I am not confused about how to continue .

This variation makes no sense, this is some French exchange and we do not play this Ar ray, please check your move order… 😀

So shall I delete this thread as it is the doubt itself is wrong and it can confuse other players ?

WhiteMood #2 Scotch

Hi GMs and everyone, I am really enjoying the progressive courses and also the section on the Scotch, my favourite. I have a question on one of the tips in section 9 “plans against passive moves”. Suggested moves are:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. Nc3 Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. f3 OO 8. Qd2 d6 9. OOO

My question is what happens if Black have a wake up call and play 8… d5 instead?

Thanks

Replies

Why don't you play exd5 and go Bg5 and try to create some weakness on c6 later? This is what I would do but there are several moves possible…

about certificates

I took the quiz of the black mood opening and got 49 out of 49 but it is clearly wrong because I did significant number of mistakes and tried again after finding the right move.

I have no problem of giving me the option to try again but I think you should count lines that I failed in the first try as a mistake in calculating the score.

Replies

Thanks, we will maybe consider this for future updates, but this is not an essential priority at the moment. Thanks anyways.

lines that I find hard to memorize

In this thread I am going to post lines that I find relatively harder to memorize in the starter white mood or black mood course with the hope that posting them here will make it easier for me to memorize the line and maybe other people will give tips how to memorize them.(I will start in this post with 2 lines)

1)1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Qf6 5.Nf3(the natural move for me seems to be 5.Be3 to develop pieces and also defend the knight).

5.Nf3 defends against the idea of Qxf2 mate but Qxf2 mate is also not a problem after 5.Be3

2)1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 Nf6 4.dxe5
4.d5 seems to me more natural for white

I understand that 4.dxe5 is also good because after 4…Nxe4 white has the option of Bc4 with some threats but  dxe5 is against my instincts that want to have my knight at e5 earlier than the opponent knight at e4 that is the situation in 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

about quiz and idea for improvements

I have fun with improvement so I decided to take the Tactic Ninja quiz and to do it again and again in order to do it faster.

The first step was to do the first 180 problems without measuring time.
I had few mistakes(after a mistake i thought and found the correct move).  Then I decided to see how many I can do in a an hour with a rule that I stop if I get 3 mistakes).

First try 74
Second try 143
Third try 186
 4th try 211

I do not plan to do all the 777 in one hour because it seems to me an exercise of moving the mouse fast(and I am not good in moving the mouse fast with no mistakes) and I think at some point after I get more than 300 in one hour I am going to increase the time that I allow myself to solve the quiz when my target is to do all the 777 in 2 hours.

More comments:
1)I would like to have an option for random order of the problems because when I solve the quiz again and again my memory may also remember that after move A in puzzle k there is move B in puzzle k+1 that help to solve the puzzles faster but does not help in chess.
2)I would like to have an option when I cannot play a move as a solution and need to post all the lines that I need to consider to solve the puzzle.
Practically there are cases when I memorize the first move but do not memorize the justification(I can calculate the justification but if I do it then it is going to take me more time and if I need to post all the lines that I need to calculate before the first move to have a correct solution then I think it may be a better training).
The option to write all the lines that I need to calculate may be useful also to check that when I calculate I do not miss some important line that I need to calculate but is not in the solution because the solution has only one line.
Note that I do not suggest this option instead of what we have but as an additional option because I think that memorizing the moves without calculating is also useful because it can be productive to start  calculating the right lines when you think and not the wrong lines.

My chess study journey

Hi everyone, first of all thanks for the answers you gave me the previous days. So, I'm writing this post because last week I've created, following the articles here on chessmood, a study plan to improve my chess. I'm currently rated 1300 rapid on chess.com and around the same blitz. From now on I will commit to write one post per week, updating you with my current status. Why? Well, first because writing every week will force me to follow the plan, second, because I want to encourage you doing the same with studying your chess. My goal is to reach 1800 within June 2024. Wish me luck, see you in the first update next week

That sounds like a good plan! 👍

Good luck on your chess journey!

Excellent.  I look forward to reading about your study plan and your weekly progress.  Good luck! 😎

Sicilisn Defense

What to do after (white to play) (anti sicilian with Nc3 and d6) Be3 then d5 threatening d4 winning a piece

Continue watching. Originally, 10.Be3 was proposed, but some later it was corrected to 10.Bb5!

Scotch Game

What to do after - 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Qf6 5. Nf3 Bc5 6. Nc3 Nge7 7.Nb5 Bb6 8. Be3 Bxe3?

Thank You!

Take a look at the picture attached, this is the continuation that I would do. We probably worked it out time ago with Avetik, but I do not remember exactly when. Anyway, it shoud be more than enough…😃

A bad blitz game with the what avetik call the french attack

4…e5 is theory but 5.Bb5 is not covered in the starter course.
I needed to play 5…exd4 but did not evaluate correctly the line 6.cxd4 dxe4 7.Nxe4 when I cannot capture d4 because of a pin and also memorized Bb5 dxe4 Nxe4 Qd5 that is not in this position but in position when the pawn is still at e6 so playerd dxe4 Nxe4 Qd5(exd4 is still better at this point but white can reply Nf3).

After my opponent found the best move 7.Qe2 I blundered by 7…Bd7(7…Nf6 is the only move but I did not like Nxf6+).

I thought later that I could play 7…f5 but analysis by the computer after the game showed me that 8.Ng3 Qxg2 Nf3 is winning for white.

My opponent failed to punish me and gave me a second chance when I needed to play 8…Nxe5 but I did not like 9.Bxd7+  when Nxd7 losing to Nf6+_ and after Qxd7 I did not like a possible pin of the knight so I played.
8…Qxe5 that allow my opponent to get a decisive advantage by 9.Nf3 Qe7 10.Bg5(my opponent gave me another chance by 10.0-0 but I decided to castle and only after it understood that I needed to play 10…f5)
After 11.Re1 the move f5 is also not good and I decided to develop my knight
When I played 12…Qxe4 I already planned the game line 14…Nd6 but only after playing this move I understood that white has Bxc6 so it does not win a piece(otherwise I could try 14…h6 .  Inspite of it I went for Nd6 with the idea that at least I make my bishop active and missed 14…Nxf2 when 15.Bxc7 is not good for white because of Bc5(when the computer suggested in the analysis 14…Nxf2 my first thought was that it is not good because of 15.Bxc7 but I knew that the engine saw something after 15.Bxc7 so continued to think and found Bc5)

Dear Uri,

Bb5 is not covered in the Starter Course and neither is in the main books that offer this variation. The reason is simple: it is not a good move that automatically allows us to destroy the center with exd4 and dxe4 equalizing and having a good game, probably with the Bishop pair too if White wishes to take on the Bishop.
Ask yourself constantly about the opponent threats instead of memorizing lines, that should reduce your blunders I believe.😀

December 6th Daily puzzle

Today's daily puzzle is a nice stalemate trap, but on the last move if you attempt to promote to a rook it doesn't mark it as correct, eve though a queen or rook would work. Am I missing something?

Replies

Promoting to a Rook would also be correct, even though it is not recognized by the official cm solution. In a few cases this has happened before with other puzzles as well, but the main thing I guess is that you recognized the stalemate idea of the solution

Any advice for a classical chess tournament?

I have my first classic chess tournament in 7 days

Are there any tips or articles I can follow to achieve a good result?

I usually play online and have only played OTB a few times. What advice would be helpful?"
