Attack Like a Viking - Master 18 King-chasing strategies with a GM

Course 149 episodes

Creators GM Gabuzyan Hovhannes

There’s one thing that brings a smile to every chess lover’s face – Mikhail Tal sacrificing his Queen!

Many take inspiration from it. They daydream of sacrificing the Queen to finish the game so they can get claps and that ‘wow’😲 from their friends! It’s all great.

However, attacking isn’t just about seeing tactics and tossing pieces out of the board in the name of sacrifice.

A lot more goes into a successful attack – from assessing the pre-conditions to bringing your army to keeping the momentum to finish off the opponent eventually.

There are methods and principles you can use to consistently get attacking positions and end the game with a beautiful finish.

That’s what this course covers. You’re going to learn:

✅ How to plan an attack?
✅ The fundamental rules and concepts you need to know while attacking.
✅ How to identify the ideal situation before you can launch an attack.
✅ The common mistakes majority of the players make while attacking and how to avoid them

This course will equip you with the fundamentals of destroying an enemy’s defenses and launching dangerous attacks.

Below are the positions from the course:

I find GM Gabuzyan Hovhannes to be an excellent online teacher. This course, like his other courses, takes a thorough, step-by-step approach, with clear examples, tests, and explanations, while also employing an appropriate level of humor (and sometimes downright silliness) to keep it fun and interesting. I believe that I learned a lot from this course about attacking. I expect this will be true for other students as well. Highly recommended.

Very good except in Section 17 in Prophylaxis in a messy position, at 1:48 he said Rxe5. Qxf6 was way faster because it is mate in 2 while Rxe5 was mate in 3. The rest are perfect anyways.

This is one of the best courses here, I think. And it puts sleepy ol' Art of Attack to shame.
Akiba Rubinstein

Great course! I'm rated >2300 online but feel I reinforced my knowledge. This kind of content is way more digestible than books such as The Art of the Attack by Vukovic and provides you with all the concepts you must know to make better decisions in your games. If you are rated above 1500 online (and already watched the simplified version of this course), then you can't go wrong.

Hello, i wanted to give you some feedback. After watching Tactic Ninja i thought that i have never seen this level of quality in a chess video-course. After watching Attack Like a Viking, i think it should be more similar to Tactic Ninja. When i watched Tactic Ninja, it was so challenging that i couldn't do more than a section in a day. Every secton was not just acknowledging the patterns, but training hard to use them in practice. This is what i am missing in the Attack Like a Viking course. I didn't need someone to tell me that in opposite side castling you can pawn storm the opponent, i already knew. I need more examples to practice that knowledge.

ChessMood
Thanks for the feedback, Massimo! I tried not to overwhelm with examples and make it 20 hours.

I've found attacking chess examples (other than tactical motives) are usually presented with lengthy analysis which overwhelm many amateurs. This course uses more straight-forward positions focusing on getting the ideas across rather than demonstrating complex World-class Grandmaster attacks. Examples in this course are simpler, building one's confidence that they could be reproduced in one of your own games.

ChessMood
Thanks, David, You are right, the point is not long calculations. We tried to deliver the principles and concepts in an easy way to understand.
