French Defense/Attack

😀

Hello, Hope you are well.

I noticed that you were talking about a main course of French Attack in the BlackMood Openings. Is it already out or when is it coming out ? I am really interested.

Replies

It will come out soon. For now, you can go further with self analysis.

Yes, this year we will hopefully release it. In the meanwhile keep practicing and analyzing your games… 😀

Today's puzzle reward

Hello,

It seems to me that solving today puzzle (01 / 23) at first try does not lead to moodcoin reward.

Did I miss something?

Replies

Well it worked out perfectly for me, are you sure you did it first try or that you played the correct combination(Bf2, Qxf2, Nd7+, Kd5, Nf6+)?

Board vision and planning ahead

OK, I was reviewing a game and noticed that the evaluation of my position fell from around 6 to 1.5.  That's quite the drop so I looked at the ‘best’ moves:

  • Exchange my c1 bishop for black's h6 knight (bishop captured by pawn on g7)
  • Sacrifice my f3 knight by taking black's pawn on e5 (captured by pawn on f6)
  • Queen to h5 for check
  • King moves and queen takes a pawn for another check and lining up …
  • King moves and we capture the rook on h8

I saw the potential initial exchange but not all of the moves thereafter.  How long does it take before you begin to ‘see’ these things while playing?

Some time between tomorrow and never. Don't over-analyse, get experience, study your own games, the games of better players, improve tactical play, and eventually positional understanding. Many ideas come from having seen it somewhere before, assuming it's not forcing or a clear positional motive.

At 800, if you calculated checks, captures and saw most threats your opponent and yourself had, plus had a good grasp of tactical motives, mating patterns and basic endgame and opening principles with a little bit of experience I suspect your rating would more than double.

For me, this is a matter of patter recognition. When you see someone play f6/f3, the h6-e8 diagonal  around the king becomes very weak. Sacrificing the knight to open up the queen is a line you should calculate after someone played f6/f3. I first saw it in this video: https://chessmood.com/course/opening-principles/episode/3437

You missed this concrete line, however you still did convert your advantage later on, so well done! 👍

Daily Puzzle is wrong.

The daily puzzle (16th January 2024) after Bf5 h1=Q the move c8=R+ is wrong apparently c8=Q+ is right even though there is no difference.

Replies

This is a bug.

I think it's because it's programmed only to accept one right move, but I might be wrong. If someone can confirm it can accept different right moves than yea it's a bug

This is because the daily puzzle , I think, should be programmed in a way that there is only one correct move. As the main point of most puzzles is to improve your pattern recognition by forcing you to find the only continuation so there is less chances of solving the puzzle by luck. But in this case promoting to a rook is also correct, as it leads to the same continuation.

I have got a question.

How do you buy courses with Moodcoins?

Technical error\bug

there is bag/bug (Technical error) in the slp cuorse in the first qwis of the 8 sektion

Replies

which bug?

Study courses in sequence or in parallel?

Is it advisable to follow a sequential learning approach for the Rating Booster and Opening courses, taking one course at a time, or is it acceptable and beneficial to study 2-3 courses concurrently?

Studying the courses sequentially feels somewhat impractical, as it might take a considerable amount of time to get to other important concepts.

Hi Dan,😀

This depends a bit on individual needs, did you already have the 1 on 1 call with Avetik or Gabu?
Because during the call depending on your level and needs they will recommend you how to best proceed.
If you haven't yet, no worries. 😅

As a general rule you can study courses in parallel of course, for exemple you should watch a daily lesson every day, one section of Tactic ninja every day too, one classic game per day, you can watch some endgame basics too, etc. Then if you study one opening, focus on this one and do not start another one, I do not think that it helps to study several openings at the same time. 😀 😄
You need to create your own routine, the more defined the better and tweak it a bit according to your memory, time, etc…
😁I hope this helped you a bit, but if you haven't yet, do the 1 on 1 call with a GM… 💪

PRO ONLY: Participate in the Scotch Tournament with a GM

https://chessmood.com/event/scotch-tournament
Do not forget tomorrow to participate in the online tournament with GM Gabuzyan, we will practice the opening and then we will analyze our games a different day. This will give us a better overview of the Scotch and an opportunity to learn from our mistakes. 😀
Time to put into practice your study my friends, and even if you are not playing the Scotch, just join for the fun of it! Develop the pieces, don't blunder and check mate the oponent… Easy isn't it? 😀

Replies

I think this tournament is a great feature . Sadly, i won’t be able to participate this time as I work on Tuesdays . I hope there will be more event like this in the future ( and not only on Tuesday ) . I will watch the recordings for sure as soon as i can and especially the one analyzing the games .

MoodCoins

Hey! I was just wondering how to spend my moodcoins. It says I can use it to buy courses yet I do not see any option to do so for any of the courses. Can someone be kind enough to enlighten this poor mind?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Try this:

  1. Go to the Courses page and pick your course
  2. Select the option “Or get lifetime access”
  3. Select the option “Buy the course”
  4. In the right-hand section titled “Choose your payment method” the last option will be MoodCoin.

Remember that $1 = 1,000 MoodCoin.  So, if the course costs $300 that is 300,000 MoodCoin.

3 brilliant moves : https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/95239193699?tab=review

I'm white

I only started playing chess in the middle of October so I'm still working on my ‘Lose 100 games as quickly as possible’ objective - I'm good at the losing part, its fitting in the number of games that can be an issue!

As with many beginners, I blunder frequently and often lack board vision.  So, I was thrilled to spot the closing move in the game below - I didn't play with the objective of being able to play this move, it just sort of developed and I would certainly not have spotted this without my recent ‘gift Chessmood courses’ (BlunderProof ftw!).  Thank you Avo 😀

such a crazy game!!!

A very fun game I played in the first round of a local otb tournament. Engine says I missed some Ba4 tactics, but I made up for it with some timely pawn moves and a decisive interference tactic.

A very good positional game. I made a plan to get a good knight on d5 vs a bad darksquared bishop and it worked perfectly!

A nice demenstartion of using a good minor piece, and why 2… e5 in the sicilian is not a good idea!

What is meant when Chessmood gives a thumbs up?

Hello champions,

You all played some really nice games in the final month of 2023! It was a pleasure to go through them. Here are the prizes for the best games of December 2023:

The 1st prize goes to Vicentiu Iorga. Your game perfectly shows how to punish the opponent when they ignore development and grab free pawns. The Rook, Bishop and Knight sacrifice on move 10, 11 and 12 was spectacular! Awesome game!

https://lichess.org/GMA9dScz/black#24

God Grace takes the 2nd prize for their classy attacking game in the WhiteMood Petroff. The Rook and Queen sacrifice leading to a win with only a Bishop and pawn in the middlegame, was indeed very graceful! Well done!

https://lichess.org/97U5SEPZ#39

Paulius the Witcher takes the 3rd prize. Great to see the way you grabbed the initiative and put pressure on Black’s position after they grabbed the central pawn. Also, the Rook sacrifice to destroy the King’s cover was good. Well done!

https://lichess.org/nA6OJwAv#35

Igor Krayushkin takes the 4th prize. We liked how you played simple moves to build up your attack and didn’t rush. You made all your pieces happy, then destroyed the opponent King’s shelter with a Bishop sacrifice and calmly finished off the game. Nicely done!

https://share.chessbase.com/SharedGames/share/?p=DjsL2ybKglkNS6JIpth+nhIHs4PwjRw5LB+Nn+Aoowc115U2/AzZ9tZE3jUpmhEN

The 5th prize goes to Paul Nguyen. Rg1, Rf1, and later g4 was a smart choice to start an attack given that the center was closed. Then you got all your pieces into the attack and the Nxg6 was a nice finishing touch. Good game!

Congratulations to all of you. And thanks once again to everyone for sharing your games.

Question: Nice Posts

When you hover over the star icon on a forum post, it says to add or remove from nice posts, but where can you access the ‘nice posts’?

Replies

Hello,

Click on your profile picture, then click profile and you will see “nice posts” as the fifth option, where you can access all the posts you 've marked as nice.

Anti - Sicilian 2.Nc6 line

What should be done against 2.Nc6 3.Bb5 Nd4 4. Nf3 e6 5. 0-0 a6 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. b3 g5!

I have had this position in many of my blitz games and I cannot find any good plans for white here. It seems that black gets an easy game from here and white is very restricted.

Here is one of the blitz games that I played: https://www.chess.com/game/live/91102115709

I had a terrible position from the opening but I was able to trick my opponent later on to equalise but then still ended up losing because his pieces were very active.

Replies

Hey Rahul,

It's important to play there with Bb2, and I prefer to trade the Bishop on g7 later on with Na4 ideas.

Then try to play through center, it's not always easy to locate Black King on the Kingside after this g5.

Feature Request: Mistakes Collection

It would be amazing if there was a ‘Mistakes Collection’, or a collection of puzzles that we previously got wrong. From the in-course quizzes, and maybe even the daily puzzle, we could revise those further instead of just trying 10 times on a puzzle if we can't figure it out.

Replies

Well, this would be quite difficult to implement and the time spent vs real utility I do not know if is feasible. Still we will take note of it.
By the way, what I always recommend my students is to write the number (on a paper or a doc) of the puzzle failed and do them again at the end of the course or some days later, just the ones missed. And then after a couple of months again… Then write again the ones missed, there should be less than the previous time of course… 😀

Matador Course Quiz 2 Alternative

For the second quiz position of the Matador Course, there is an easier solution than the one offered: instead can be played 1…Nb4+ 2.axb4 Nc1+, with 3…Qa2# next.

Replies

1…Nb4+ doesn't work because of 2.Qxb4+! This is a check so Black has no time for Nc1+. Then  2… axb4 3.Rxe6 and that's the end.

Daily Lesson Question

Hi, I am going through the daily lessons course, and I have a query. In the 18th lesson, king's safety, in the test position, isn't g5 followed by Nd5 winning the exchange immediately?

Replies

I’m not completely sure as I haven’t seen this part yet but I think the whole point of these videos is to enforce the idea of what has been taught in the lesson. But maybe you might be correct!

Are misses considered as blunders?

Lichess analysis' usually mark misses (such as a free knight) as blunders and missing winning an exchange as mistakes. Should they be considered as blunders at this level?

Example: https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/96862226285?tab=review&move=55

https://lichess.org/y22llzg2#56

I play as black here, and after 25.. Nxg3!! brilliant move, i missed two winning moves in a row, especially missing mate in 3 by playing 28.. Qf6?? (sorry😅)

Aight before tellin me abt how much of a dumpsterfire that move was (i'm sorry for ruining your eyes😅), Misses comes in all shapes and sizes. For example, here:https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/98855057161?tab=review&move=34

https://lichess.org/LL7XClw6#35

18. Rae1 is considered to be a miss while lichess considers this as an inaccuracy. I know losing mate in 3 and revealing an attack on a rook are veryyy different, but a miss is a miss anyway lol😆

I know in some higher levels, misses are considered blunders, (for a very good reason) but should i be worried right now at this level?

I think at your level you should focus on big blunders. For big blunders I mean: hanging a piece, not taking a free piece, missed mate by you and moves that give opponent forced mate, bad calculation (not too deep lines. Usually exchange calculation went wrong and some other thing where you say: “Oh, how didn't I saw this”), and missed tactics (again, not too deep and complicated ones).

In the 2 examples, you could consider a blunder the first one because you missed mate (even though it was not mate in one and you kept the advantage, so maybe don't stress out too much), while the second isn't a blunder (you kept a significant advantage and the move was ok). Improving in your chess, you'll have to be more strict with yourself in terms of mistakes, but for now don't worry and focus on big blunders. If you want chessmood has the blunderproof course covering the topic, I have not tried it but reviews are good

Did you watch the first section of Blunderproof?

There Avetik describes perfectly what is a blunder…
Check it out, it will solve all your questions… 😀

This is because I think lichess decides whether a move is a blunder or not based on evaluation change

so maybe in the position of missing an exchange sacrifice doesn’t severely change the evaluation in the same way as missing the free knight.

Well I think at your such misses SHOULD NOT be counted if your still winning

I need an advice :) Should we hire her? :)

In ChessMood all our new employees should also pass a test - survive 15 moves against Grandmaster ?

Lily survived 12 moves, shall we do an exception for her? ?

Replies

That's a very open question. I think that would depend on the way she played. Did she show initiative? Did she dare take a risk? Was she inventive or passive? Sometimes you can read someones character a little from the way he/she plays.

Maybe you publish the game, so members can judge for themselves.

Giving another chance is appreciated....as we all make mistake....so let her try again...and see if she could survive....?

Did she show the right mood while playing? Did she keep the right mood while losing? If she did then make the exception!

However, if she threw the king at you when she lost, what would she do if you didnt hire her? Better think long and hard about this :)

You should have let her play white

I think we should

I think so too.  If she mostly made good moves in the game then yes.

everyone deserves a second chance :)

Maybe another try for her! If she played genuinely badly then no but if she blundered something in an equal position then yes.

Does it mean that anyone that survives 15 moves against a GM is hired?😂 Are there tryouts

maybe yes if she mostly made good moves

🤣Well, Lily is the best! We were very lucky to be able to work together! Thanks God that Avetik did not follow our hiring policy in this case!!! 😅

Yes

if this is real it's actually a stupid and also mean test. ok, i get if you like everyone to be at least that litte bit into chess to survive till middlegame  but debating that here looks like putting at some kind of job pillory in the community.

maybe i'm just slow on uptaking some banter or whatever joke. point it out to me and my moral pointer finger :x

Lily's great lol. Very warm and positive person. Good thing you hired her.

Sure you should do it

Chess training in 5 minutes

If I have a few minutes of free time and am inspired to work on my chess, I'll typically play a blitz game. I was wondering what the rest of you do chess wise if you only have, say, five minutes. Blitz games, puzzles, puzzle rush, or something else? What do you think is most productive for your long term chess?

I'm looking to build good habits. I've been clean of bullet chess the last couple months, which I like to think of as a step in the right direction.

I would solve tactics of the Tactic Ninja Quiz ( https://chessmood.com/quiz/the-tactic-ninja#441 ) 😃

I'd do tactics as well. One game of blitz doesn't bring anything.

If you're really inspired you have more than only a few minutes in my view.

Same here, puzzles/quizzes.  A 5 minute (or less) game of chess does nothing to improve my play - but perhaps that changes as you become more experienced.

Well I think cleansing your self from bullet is a good start, but playing puzzles on Lichess is the next one. Play hardest (+600) Like me even though I am 3100 i still do that if you even spend 30 minuets or 1 hour for 5 puzzles it is okay just make sure you get them correct. Hope this helps you.Bye.

Yes wiping out bullet from your routine is very important and playing bullet too much is certainly a bad habit.

I think puzzles is the most efficient way to spend 5 min of your free time as it is no secret that puzzles is the single most helpful way in my opinion to improve your chess. But then again, you shouldn’t completely remove the idea of blitz games as they are very helpful for testing your opening repertoire and decision making, so I would recommend some days doing puzzles and some days doing blitz games if you only have around 5 min. per day for chess.

New article: 7-Step Plan to Succeed in Chess in 2024

At the end of 2023 GM Noel Studer wrote a 7-day newsletter on how to succeed in chess in 2024. It became very popular, because simply, it was just very good!

Then he kindly agreed to summarize his 7-step plan for ChessMood students.

I see the price is 297$ and I am supposed to pay only 50% of it but I have no coupon code and I am not sure how to get it so I still did not buy it.

🙂

Excellent condensed article from Noel's series as always. It is very helpful.

He's almost as good as the famous Chessmood coaches!

Thank you Avetik for sharing!

Probably be a good idea to have a link here for purchase of his course.

Help with classical chess

I have been playing chess for a long time-since 1984. I took a break for some years (20 years). When I came back to chess in 2020 I only played in rapid and blitz tournaments and I have been doing pretty well. I even won won in October. How do I prepare to transition to classical chess like 90 minute games from 5 and 15 mintue games? ANY advice appreciated.

Are your rapid and blitz tournaments OTB or online?

Hi Henry!
Could you be so kind to provide us a bit of background, like rating, country, age, etc.
In the last post you wrote that you get lost. What do you mean you by that?
You don't know the plans? You think too much? You feel overwhelmed?

Please add a bit of info so we can make a better assessment of your case… Thanks!!!! 😁
